A few hours after 4,000 runners did a marathon sprint around Santa Cruz, CD Tenerife showed less firm footing as they slipped to a 0-1 home defeat to Villareal B. What would a CD Tenerife season be without a wobble along the way, but this loss against a side reduced to 10 men for the second half highlighted a worrying loss of form with no win in five games.
It was a flat performance, and home goalie Soriano was the only player on top of his game with a turn away from a scissor kick, and a two footed block. The damage had been done in the 23rd minute when Fores rammed home a header from a deep free kick. There was no real reaction from Tenerife, and as the game dragged into the second half the defeat seemed harder to avoid.
Even the ever reliable players like Mellot seemed lacking in the spark needed to restore some home pride. Abraham tried to offer a way back when he lunged for a foul that met with an instant red. Angel came on for the second half, at least his physical precence and determination offered hope. Bodiger, another half time sub, hasn´t shown much yet and needs to get stuck in more.
It´s been good to see young players coming through and given a chance but Teto is till a long way off being our third main goal threat and must be feeling the shadow of a possible January loan out getting closer as a way to sharpen up his style of play. It´s still early days but the team have lost the build up of belief from pre season and early league games. The crowd was another bumper 17,811, it´s time for players to dig deep and reset the optomism among the faithful.
